School Programs

All our classes are GPS correlated while offering students the opportunity to discover first-hand the life of Georgia’s unique barrier island ecosystems!
Beach Ecology: A look at barrier island dynamics and the amazing organisms found along the beaches of Georgia. Topics include: beach dynamics, erosion, sand depostion, waves and tides, and beach life. This is an off site class.

Herpetology: A hands-on encounter with native reptiles and amphibians. Learn about the biology and ecological roles of our local “herps”, and enjoy the chance to handle snakes, turtles, alligators, etc.

Salt Marsh Ecology: A journey into Georgia’s abundant salt marsh. Learn about tidal creeks, estuaries, food webs, Spartinagrass, and the importance of the marsh ecosystem. Prepare for mud!

Seining and Nets: Learn how to use a seine net, and discover the fish, shrimp, crabs, and other life swimming in Georgia’s near-shore waters. This is an off site class.

Dock Study: Students use dip nets to collect and study organisms from the fouling community at the dock. They will examine their finds under microscopes in our lab. This is an on site class.

Program Options and Costs

Field-based, off-site programs (Ex. Beach or Seining programs):
$12 per person for the first class includes a 60 minute program plus walk through our live animal exhibits. ($10.00 per person for any additional 60 minute programs).

On-site -1 Hour programs (Ex. Herpetology, Sea Turtles, Dock, Marsh, Public Programs):
$10.00 per person, approximately 1 hour, includes walk-through of Tidelands exhibit area.

On-site -1.5 Hour programs (Ex. Dock, Marsh, Herpetology):
$12.00 per person, approximately 1.5 hour, includes walk-through of Tidelands exhibit area.

Exhibit Area Walk-Through Without Other Programs: $5 per person (children 2 years and under free), admission to Tidelands exhibit area featuring live animal exhibits, touch tanks, and educational displays.

 

 

Group Programs

We can customize programs for other groups with specific interests or curriculum needs, including family groups, youth groups, recreation programs, elder hostel groups, and home school groups. Contact us for more information and reservations for your group.
