Junior Camp 2024 Activities
Fort Pulaski Tour: Come experience firsthand some of the amazing American history that happened right next door to the Burton 4-H Center. Through a walking tour see the fort that Robert E Lee helped to build; with cannon balls still imbedded in some walls, learn how new technology changed the course of history.
Beach Ecology: Through our informative beach ecology class learn about how the north Georgia mountains can be found right here on the Georgia coast. Ever wonder why is the sea salty? Learn about erosion and how the sea oats can help protect our beautiful island. Then use a 20’ seine net to discover some of the creatures that live just out of sight beneath the waves.
Tybee Lighthouse: Start working out now so you are ready for the challenge of climbing to the top of the Tybee Lighthouse. As the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia, the climb to the top is a trip through time and makes lighthouse day leg day! Savor the views of Tybee Island and the Savannah River from the highest point around.
Community Service: We are lining up some interesting and rewarding opportunities to give back to our local community. You will have the opportunity to maybe do some work relating to oyster and stream bank restoration, maybe serve at a local food bank or spend some time at the retirement community visiting with someone’s grandparent…details as we get closer to camp.
Marsh Ecology: Spend some time learning about Georgia’s expansive coastal salt marsh environment and why it is so important to the health of all of Georgia. Spend time collecting some of the animals that call the marsh home, then head out into the marsh to experience it in real time.
Crabs and Critters: Do you like animals? Well we’ve got’em! Like snakes, we’ve got a few. Turtles? We’ve got them too. How about a gator-they’re cute when they are little! And of course, we have a bunch of fish and crabs and all kinds of other stuff that live in the creek that runs alongside the Center.
Savannah Dinner Cruise: Bring your dancing shoes! We will spend one afternoon on River Street walking the shops and then hop on the river boat for a dinner cruise and dance. Dress casual if you want or bring something dressy; it is up to you. Just be ready to eat, dance, and have fun!
