Description:
As the word about 4-H GPS/GIS projects spreads across the country, ready or not, most of us will be called upon to get involved. In our busy Extension lives, we rarely have an opportunity to learn, practice, and reflect on our learning without distraction. This pre-conference experience, sponsored by the GPS/GIS Task Force, is your chance to work with GPS/GIS in a supportive setting that will provide learning, practice time, resources to take home, and a chance to interact with 4-H professionals already working in the field. This hands-on, interactive workshop will:
• Provide a basic introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS);
• Introduce (experientially, of course) the use of GPS to beginners;
• Present and practice ideas that experienced technology educators can use to teach GPS to youth;
• Provide entry-level users with a computer based GIS experience that will include downloading points from GPS, converting points to simple shape files, and creating a presentation map;
• Give experienced GIS users more in-depth instruction using ArcView 9 to manipulate basic shape files, add points to maps, attach data to maps, and doing some geo-referencing;
• Introduce and try out some of the new 4-H geospatial curriculum;
• Provide all participants with great ideas, resources, materials and step by step handouts to take home.
Register online at https://www.4hregistration.com for this pre-conference workshop.
