Liberia 4-H:Program Overview

In the spring of 2011, Collegiate4-Her from Evans County, Melissa Lynch enrolled in the course Directed Project in Leadership at the University of Georgia. This course included starting and participating in a service project of interest. Falling back on her 4-H experience and connections, Melissa decided to work on a project in global 4-H.

The 4-H program in Liberia is a national government organization that helps children and adults ranging in ages 6 to 35 to achieve their goals by learning by doing.

The different programs they have available are general agriculture and natural resources, animal science and husbandry, plant science and gardening, home, family and healthy living, citizenship and community service, volunteering, and personal leadership development. These programs are offered in the schools, both during and after school hours. They would like to offer sports and plant disease and prevention in the future. The challenges they face are a lack of technology, learning materials, funds, and infrastructure. 4-H Liberia relies of the 4-H organization as a whole to provide them with the resources they need. With the help of Jeff Buckley, Extension 4-H Specialist International & Citizenship, Melissa organized ways to get Georgia 4-H involved in the Liberia 4-H program.
