GCEE: Global Citizenship & Environmental Experience in Puerto Rico

Website Correction: There will be no GCEE trip in the Summer of 2012.

The 4-H Global Citizenship and Environmental Experience trip to Puerto Rico provides high school 4-Hers with the opportunity to explore another culture without technically leaving the United States.  As environmental education is a major component of the trip, students have hands-on opportunities to explore a variety of tropical ecosystems including a bioluminescent bay and a tropical rainforest.

Students are also able to investigate the strides Puerto Ricans are making in terms of environmental awareness and are able to take home ideas that can easily be implemented in the United States.  4-H’ers are immersed in the Spanish language and Latin American culture and have the benefit of experiencing both alongside Puerto Rican 4-H youth and adult leaders.

Objectives
  • Engage in meaningful dialogue on 4-H youth development and Citizenship programs
  • Experience environmental science through the exploration for a variety of tropical ecosystems
  • Learn about the lifestyles of youth in other cultures
  • Benefit from an international experience of Latin American culture
  • Develop life-skills including budgeting, flexibility, and planning

How to Apply

We will begin accepting applications for the 2013 Global Citizenship & Environmental Experience in Puerto Rico trip later this year. The deadline to apply will be in February 2013 (this will also include the first payment for the trip).

The application process will favor youth who have been active and engaged in 4-H activities and express an interest in environmental and cultural learning.

This will be a physically demanding trip, requiring youth to live and travel in close quarters. Participants should be able to handle unfamiliar situations and rustic conditions while maintaining a positive attitude.

Adult Leaders

We will be seeking one to two adult chaperones. Applications for adult leaders will be due in February 2013.

At this point, we do not have funds to pay for adult chaperones. With that in mind, priority will be given to applicants who have a solid application and can provide for their own expenses. We are looking for ways to help cover costs, but we cannot make any guarantees.

We will provide additional details as they develop.
