AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects over 80,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, health, and homeland security. AmeriCorps’ members serve with more than 2,000
non-profits, public agencies, and community organizations. The AmeriCorps programs are funding by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal government agency that engages more than five million Americans in intensive community service through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Learn & Serve America.
AmeriCorps consists of three separate programs; AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps NCCC – FEMA Corps. AmeriCorps members serve in full or part-time positions over a 10-12 month period. Members serve in full or part-time positions over a 10-12 month period. Upon completion of their service, members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which is equal to the current amount of the Pell Grant. Members also have access to other benefits including a health benefit plan, loan forbearance, childcare assistance, and ongoing professional development.
Georgia 4-H is supported by two AmeriCorps programs; AmeriCorps VISTA and AmeriCorps State.. From 2010-2013 the AmeriCorps programs have provided over 25 full time members to support the shared goals of improving the lives of Georgians through education. Georgia AmeriCorps State members provide direct service to children and youth involved in 4-H programming in 16 counties throughout Georgia. Georgia 4-H AmeriCorps VISTA members provide indirect service in 11 counties through Georgia, working with County Agents and State Staff to increase needed resources.
